ESPN’s College Gameday has a segment before their Saturday Selections where the hosts make “SuperDog Picks.”  A team that is a significant underdog, who they feel will cover or ultimately win the game.

This week at College Gameday in Ann Arbor, Michigan, host Kirk Herbstreit selected the BYU-Hawaii game as his SuperDog pick.  Can you blame him? The Cougars are an 11-point favorite over a Hawaii team that is 6- 1.  BYU is expected to tab Zach Wilson as their starting quarterback for the first time this season and Hawaii is going to have quarterback Cole McDonald back.  So the 11-point line in favor of BYU might be a bit excessive.

Herbstreit said he feels Hawaii’s run-and-shoot offense will give BYU fits this evening in Provo.

This is the first time this season that BYU is a double-digit favorite on the books this year.  BYU has been a favorite on the Vegas books two times this year and they lost both games.  The McNeese State game, BYU closed as a 24.5-point favorite but that was on offshore books.  So Herbie might be onto something picking the Rainbow Warriors as his SuperDog of the week.

Also, BYU's home record this year and last has been horrible.  BYU is 3-6 at home during that stretch and the only win against an FBS team was versus a one-win San Jose State team.  The other two wins were against FCS teams and those games didn't play out so well for the Cougars.  At least, as well as you would hope against FCS opposition.  Hawaii being a 6-1 team has won games this season as a double-digit underdog.  They won on the road in Week 0 against Colorado State as a two-touchdown underdog, then the following week defeated Navy as a two-touchdown underdog at Aloha Stadium on the islands.  Hawaii will not be fearful of the challenges that BYU poses and being a big underdog.
